Gas central heating systems can be flushed
At some point in the lifetime of your fully pumped gas central heating system you will wish to clear it. To exchange heating radiator valves or add an additional radiator as an example. Emptying your system is something that can be done by the none expert but competent diy practitioner.
The main reason for most individuals for Cleaning their heating system is to clean the metal radiators. The first step you should take is to turn off the gas boiler and water heating pump. To enable the system to completely flush you will need to ensure that no water is moving into the gas heating system.
The gas central heating system has a header or expansion water tank in the attic which will ensure that any water shortfall is filled up. This has a ballvalve that is the same as the one seen in your toilet cylinder. As the water reaches maximum level the ball floats on the surface and closes the valve. Water is added to the heating system if the levels fall as the ball will drop on the water surface opening the valve. This process will need to be stopped if the gas heating system is to be fully flushed. A good way to do this is to stop the ball moving by binding it to the top of the water tank.
Once you have completed the above run a hosepipe from an outside clear to the outlet of at the bottom of one of your heating radiators. Water can now enter the outside clear my flowing through the hose pipe out of the radiator valve. Obviously, if you want to clear the whole central heating system you will need to connect the hose pipe to one of the level radiators. Before you begin any other work on this central heating system you must now ensure that all the water has emptied out and no other the water is entering into the metal radiators.
By opening the bleed valves in the heating radiators on the top story you will help air to enter the heating system and speed up the Emptying process. When finished work can now start on the system.
