Central Heating systems come in different configurations. A central heating boiler, central heating radiator and pipework are common components in many of these Central Heating Systems, they are simple in plumbing terms.

Today a good Gas Central Heating system has become a major part of every home, so much so that it is being installed in all the new houses that are being constructed.

Sealed and vented or pumped systems are the two major types of Gas Central Heating Systems available.
The most commonly used systems are pumped/vented Central Heating systems. The basic differentiating components of such a system are a feed and expansion tank. The hot water tank performs two functions; firstly, supply hot water to your house, and secondly, provides heat to the heating radiators. Water expands when heated; this expansion is accommodated in a feed-expansion tank. It is normally placed at the highest place of the house like the attic area, taking up space. The tank provides a dual supply of hot water and warmth for the house.
Most houses, especially the old ones will have a vented/pumped heating system.
A sealed system is now being used in the new houses that are being built. A sealed system, as the name suggests is a closed system so no water tanks are needed. There are no pipework or tanks also in the attic, the system is sealed in the true sense and it has its own advantages.
- There is no chance of pipes freezing in the attic.
- There won’t be any repair work on the tank or pipes which will be in the attic for a pumped/vented system.
- Because the system is not vented, there is less chance of water leaking out.
- Reduced risk of airlocks, corrosion and sludge as there isn’t a chance of air being drawn down into the system through open vents as the system is sealed.
- Can be flushed out under pressure if needed by the mains water supply.
This heating system is self contained incorporating all the safety devices and other important controls. The mains water supplies the water required for the sealed Central Heating system. There is no hot water tank, so water is drawn directly from the main supply.
Separated from the sealed system by a diaphragm is a pressure vessel, which contains compressed gas; this vessel is responsible for managing variations of pressure in the heating system. Pressure buildup in a Sealed system can be relieved by a safety valve which drains out water; and pressure drop is compensated by automatic fresh intake of water via another valve.
Compared to any other form of heating, Gas Central Heating systems are by far the most practical and economical. They also provide you with complete control which is much more than other heating systems can say about themselves.
