The way to empty a gas heating system
Taking the water out of a fully pumped central heating system makes many maintenance tasks easier. To completely flush the system of sludge and contaminants might be one such instance. This is often carried out by the plumber during repair or extension work although some experienced homeowners have been known to flush their own gas heating systems.
The primary reason for most individuals for Cleaning their heating system is to clean the metal radiators. Switching off the central heating boiler and central heating pump should be the first actions you take. Prevention of any additional water entering the gas heating system is also a priority.
gas central heating systems are normally filled up through a tank in the attic. This has a ball-valve that is the same as the one seen in your toilet cylinder. This ballvalve is a ball connected to an arm that, when lifted closes the valve, which means when the water tank is full no more water can enter because the valve is shut. However when some water is pulled off the cylinder, the ball drops, the valve opens and more water gets into the tank. To fully empty the central heating system this top up process will need to be stopped. One of the best ways to check this is by putting a piece of wood across the cylinder and connecting the value arm to it, which will close this valve.
Having stopped the entry of any water to your gas central heating system you can now take the next step by attaching a hose pipe to an outlet valve on a metal radiator and running this to the outside of your property. The gas heating system can now empty by water flowing out of the metal radiator, through the outlet valve, and into the external drain. The hose pipe should be attached to one of the lower radiators if you intend to clear the whole gas heating system. Before you commence any other work on this heating system you must now ensure that all the water has emptied out and no other the water is entering into the metal radiators.
By venting the bleed valves in the heating radiators on the top level you will enable air to enter the gas heating system and accelerate up the Cleaning process. Work can commence when all the water has flushed away.
